Behind the stories
E. E. Lawson writes contemporary fiction through a literary lens, exploring ambition, identity, reinvention, and the quiet emotional fault lines that shape women’s lives.
Her novels span literary suspense, vintage romance, magical realism, and satire, but her stories often return to the same question: what happens when the version of ourselves the world expects begins to conflict with who we really are?
Emily studied Mass Communication at the University of Toledo and later pursued graduate work in Interpersonal Communication at North Dakota State University—an academic path that deepened her fascination with relationships, perception, and the stories people tell about themselves.
Long before publishing novels, she worked in nonprofit communication, spent years writing about motherhood and family life online, and raised five sons alongside a lifelong habit of filling notebooks with unfinished story ideas, observations, and characters who refused to leave her alone.
She has lived in Ohio, North Dakota, Washington, and now Rhode Island, experiences that sharpened her attention to place, reinvention, and the emotional texture of ordinary life.
Online, she shares essays, story sparks, and correspondence through The Story Room and Notes from Emily—spaces devoted to books, creativity, motherhood, and the writing life behind the novels.
She lives in Rhode Island with her husband and five sons and is almost always working on her next story.
